What is the GAPS Diet?

Created by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, the GAPS diet consists of nourishing foods that repair the gut, restore its good bacteria, and are easy on the digestive system.  Anything that is difficult to digest or could feed pathogenic bacteria is eliminated. Certain foods are gradually added back in, but Dr. Campbell-McBride strongly advises against ever including any junk food again.

Though she began her career as a neurologist and neurosurgeon in Russia, Dr. Campbell-McBride later moved to the United Kingdom and became a nutritionist.  She claims that in our modern society, full of toxins, drugs, and unhealthy foods, our guts can easily become damaged, leading to a number of health problems.  Such problems can range from acne to autism.

More of us than you probably realize.  Supposedly, the following issues can be helped by GAPS:

How Can One Diet Cure So Many Different Conditions?

“All diseases begin in the gut”

It may manifest itself in different ways, but many health problems are a gut problem.  Though the symptoms vary greatly, the source is the same. The number of physical and mental disorders that stem from an impaired gut is reaching an epidemic level.

Often referred to as leaky gut syndrome, it is basically a disruption of the gut flora.  I can get you started off with a simple explanation, but for those who want more details, don’t be afraid to dig a little deeper!
  • First, we have to understand that our body is full of bacteria, not all of it harmful.  In fact, we need the beneficial bacteria to stay healthy.  We call the bad guys opportunistic flora, and if given the chance, they will wreak havoc on the digestive system.
  •  When this bacterial coating gets damaged, toxins are able to sneak in.

  • Antibiotics-From prescriptions, farm animals, poultry, farmed fish, fruits, veggies and grains.  Antibiotics kill the bad and the good guys.  Once the gut is void of bacteria, it is open for anything to come along and repopulate it. Which, as you might have guessed, isn’t always good bacteria.
  •  Pain Killers
  • Steroid Drugs
  • The Pill
  • Diet-Sugar, processed carbs, and high fiber diets (in the form of cereals and grains) feed pathogenic microbes.
  • Bottle-Feeding-A baby who is not breast-fed will not receive the bacteria from breast milk that is so crucial to good health later on in life.
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Chronic Stress
  • Environmental Toxins

As you can see, there are not only numerous symptoms of leaky gut, but there many causes as well.  This could be rather discouraging if we did not have a solution.  I am here to tell you that I believe we do.  It is the GAPS diet.  I want to prove this by trying it myself.  I will honestly share the results of my experiment, whether good or bad.
